Police: Man Mistaken As Homeless Kidnapped, Forced To Eat At Suspect's Home

DANBURY, CONN. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A Connecticut man has been arrested on kidnapping and other charges after police say he mistook a 77-year-old man pushing a cart of cans and bottles for a homeless person.

Authorities said David Pope grabbed the victim off a street in Danbury and forcefully took him into his home to feed him.

While there, the victim was bitten in the leg by Pope's Staffordshire terrier. Pope continued to feed the man despite that he was bleeding from the bite, Lt. Christian Carroccio said.

The victim told authorities he complied with Pope's demands because he feared for his life.

The man later escaped without Pope seeing him and called police after arriving back at his home.

Pope was charged with kidnapping, reckless endangerment, interfering with an officer and disorderly conduct. He told police he thought the victim was homeless and was just offering him food.
