Canadian Couple Is All Smiles In Selfie As They Walk Down The Aisle… In Divorce Court

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A couple from Calgary, Alberta, Canada was all smiles in a Facebook picture celebrating a momentous occasion, their walk down the divorce court aisle.

As CBS2's Valerie Castro reported, the picture came complete with the hashtag #DivorceSelfie.

The post had thousands of likes in just a few days. The couple explained their cheerful faces and amicable divorce in the post.

"We're smiling because we've done something extraordinary (we think anyway!) We have respectfully, thoughtfully, and honourably ended our marriage in a way that will allow us to go forward as parenting partners for our children," they wrote.

Manhattan Matrimonial Law attorney Valerie Tocci said the selfie sheds a positive light on a usually negative event.

"My first impression was that it was funny and cute," she said, "I like the spirit of the selfie. it shows that these people were able to get through their divorce with a degree of friendliness and humor."

Tocci said the couple shouldn't have mentioned their children in the post.

"It affects not only the couple, but the entire family, and the divorce selfie is really about the couple, it's not so much about the kids," Tocci said.

Many believe the public post was not private enough.

"I think that's really bad, you know," Akash Popat said.

"This is between themselves. Their divorce, so they should keep it to themselves," Jessica Weston said.

"Do we really care as a society about whether people get divorced or not, is that like a real pressing issue that people need to see?" Eric Gottlieb said.

The couple probably didn't realize the picture would get worldwide attention. The post has since been removed from public view on Facebook.
