2 Long Island Day Care Center Workers Accused Of Abusing Children

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Two Long Island day care center workers are accused of physically abusing infants and toddlers in their care.

Southampton Town police arrested Kathleen Culver, 33, and Sarah Dawber, 23, on Friday afternoon after investigators spent five hours observing the two women behind a two-way mirror at the center.

The two women worked at the Side By Side Day Care Center in Southampton, where they were responsible for children from 4 months to 18 months old.

On several occasions, they allegedly force-fed, pushed and slammed the children down on the floor as a form of discipline, Southampton Police Lt. Susan Ralph told 1010 WINS' Mona Rivera.

"One 18-month-old child was force fed, causing it to vomit," Ralph said. "Right now, there are no other injuries that have been reported."

Culver and Dawber are charged with endangering the welfare of a child. They were issued desk appearance tickets and are due back in court Sept. 16.

"It can happen anywhere, even in our small, little community. It is terrifying," said Southampton resident Jackie Fusco.

Culver and Dawber have been terminated from their jobs, CBS2's Jennifer McLogan reported.

Dawber's lawyer called the accusations baseless and personal, originating from a disgruntled former employee.

"...our investigation has revealed that this former employee has been treated for mental health issues in the recent past -- and had admitted to her co-workers to being on medications," Dawber's attorney said in a statement. "It is extremely unfortunate that one person can make such a claim with no evidence to support it and damage the reputation of two young ladies that have dedicated themselves to the care of these children."

The arrests did not stop parents from dropping off their children Tuesday. A mother of two still sung the praises of the day care.

"My children still come here, and I believe it's an accusation, and I think that their name will be cleared," she said. "If I had another baby, I would without hesitation bring my baby here again."

Side By Side, which is licensed and accredited, has had minor infractions corrected in the past, according to state record.

New York State Office of Children and Family Services is continuing the investigation.

Police are asking parents with kids at the center to call them with any relevant information at 631-702-2230.
