Man Dies Days After Reported Attack In Lower East Side Subway Station

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police late Friday were investigating after a man died several days after a report of an assault in the Delancey Street-Essex Street subway station in the Lower East Side.

Police were called to the station, which serves the F, M, J and Z trains, around 10:05 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28 after the man was assaulted, the NYPD said.

The man – identified as Alfredo Ramos, 51, of Jersey City – was found on the platform with head injuries, police said.

Ramos was taken to Bellevue Hospital Center, where he was pronounced dead on Thursday, police said.

Police sources told CBS2 Ramos' head injuries were consistent with an assault, but it was not clear why he was attacked or who was behind it. He had his wallet, and robbery was not believed to be the motive, police said.

The New York City Medical Examiner's office will determine the cause of Ramos' death, police said.
