NYC Food Truck Lunch: Sweet Potato With Grilled Chicken From Potato House

Perry, the founder of New York Street Food, brings you his latest review on New York City street food.

Something that's gained popularity over the years are stuffed baked potatoes, which can come with all sorts of fillings. A baked potato storefront called Potatopia even opened in the Village a couple of years ago.

There's a food truck called Potato House we've seen around midtown on certain days.  They serve stuffed baked potatoes with your choice of 2 salads (tuna salad, chicken salad, beet salad, etc) for $8. We went there a couple of years ago, and decided to make a return visit.

The day we went, Potato House also had a few Daily Specials meant to appeal to the lunch crowd in midtown. Daily Specials were your choice of grilled chicken, gyro or cheese steak on a baked potato. The other special they had was a sweet potato for $7 instead of a regular potato for $8. Even better! We love sweet potatoes.

In addition to your choice of toppings, each baked potato comes with some nice freebies. Butter and shredded cheese are mixed in with the potato before it's topped. Corn and black olives are also available for free on any potato, as are dressings.

We ended up walking away with a large sweet potato mixed with butter and cheese, and topped with corn, olives, pickles and grilled chicken. We also got some blue cheese dressing on the side of the potato.

No doubt about it, this was a substantial, filling lunch. With all the butter, shredded cheese and blue cheese dressing, it won't make any low calorie lists, but you can order the potato custom-made to your liking.

We were quite happy to be able to substitute a baked sweet potato for a regular potato. The grilled chicken also turned out to be was a good topping choice, as was the blue cheese dressing. Try it next time you eat a baked potato, and you'll probably never go back to sour cream.

Potato House has accounts on Twitter here and Facebook here, but neither has been updated in months. You'll just have to find them at the usual food trucks spots in midtown and the Financial District. We found them on the SE corner of 46th St & 6th Ave on a Monday.
