Tyler Sash, Former Giants Safety, Found Dead At 27

IOWA CITY, Iowa (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Tyler Sash, a safety on the Giants' 2011 Super Bowl champion team, has died at the age of 27, the Iowa state medical examiner said.

John Kraemer, the director of forensic operations for the medical examiner, told The Associated Press that his office is investigating Sash's death along with police in Oskaloosa, Iowa, Sash's hometown. No cause of death has been determined, but an autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday morning.

KCCI-TV, a CBS affiliate, reported that Sash's body was discovered around 8 a.m. Tuesday by a family member who came to walk his dog.

The Giants selected Sash in the sixth round of the 2011 draft out of Iowa. In two seasons on the team, he played in 23 games, had 26 tackles and a forced fumble.

Sash was suspended for four games in 2012 for violating the NFL's performance-enhancing substances policy. He was cut just before the start of the 2013 season and had not played in the NFL since.

Sash was arrested in May 2014 in Oskaloosa after police said he led officers on a four-block chase with a motorized scooter before running into a wooded area. Sash later pleaded guilty to public intoxication and was fined $65.

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz abruptly canceled his weekly press conference Tuesday for what spokesman Steve Roe said was a "a private issue regarding the Iowa football program, unrelated to game preparation." Ferentz will meet with reporters Wednesday.
