Missing Conn. Man's Texts Show Concern For Being Framed For Murder

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A man who disappeared with his wife last month texted his son expressing concern he was going to get framed for killing his wife and asking the son if he hurt his mother, according to a police affidavit.

The son, 27-year-old Kyle Navin, of Bridgeport, was arrested on a federal charge of possession of a firearm by a drug user and appeared in U.S. District Court in Bridgeport on Tuesday.

He has not been charged in his parents' disappearance. He is detained pending a hearing set for Friday. Navin's lawyer, Eugene Riccio, declined to comment.

Jeanette Navin, 55, and Jeffrey Navin, 56, of Easton, haven't been seen since Aug. 4.

Their pickup truck was found with a shattered window on Aug. 9 in a commuter lot off the Merritt Parkway in Westport. Jeffrey Navin is president of J&J Refuse in Westport. Jeannette Navin is a school library aide in Weston.

State court records show Jeffrey Navin was $2.2 million in debt as of December in connection with a mortgage on a Guilford home that has been in foreclosure since 2007.

Last month, police released a statement from the Navin family which said the "financial issues recently reported by the media have not been proven to be a factor for our family members' disappearance."

"Information from the authorities indicates that there are available funds still in their bank accounts that are untouched," the statement said.

Jeffrey Navin texted his son shortly after 12:30 p.m. on Aug. 4, saying he wasn't going home "til I know mom is okay,'' according to an arrest warrant affidavit. He then asked his son if he hurt his mother.

"No absolutely not. Why would you think,'' Kyle Navin responded, according to the affidavit.

"I go home and get framed for murder,'' Jeffrey Navin then texted.

"Oh stop,'' Kyle Navin texted back.

"I'm going to the police first,'' Jeffrey Navin said.

"Ok and reason being?'' Kyle Navin asked.

Seven minutes later, Jeffrey Navin texted his son, "U R setting me up.''

"Dad really what are you talking about?'' Kyle Navin replied.

The affidavit also says police searched Kyle Navin's home and found two firearms, ammunition and evidence he was using heroin, oxycodone and other controlled substances.

Authorities say Kyle Navin told police conflicting versions of his actions on the day his parents disappeared. And the day after his parents vanished, Kyle Navin bought germicidal bleach, hair/grease drain opener, stain remover and contractor cleanup bags, police said.

Police have searched landfills around the state but have found no signs of human remains.

Anyone who knows the whereabouts of Jeffrey and Jeanette Navin, or has any information, is asked to contact Connecticut State Police at 860-685-8190.  All call will be kept confidential.
