9/11 Fund Hits $115 Million Milestone In College Scholarships

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- On the eve of the 14th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks, a private scholarship fund has reached a new milestone in providing financial assistance for family members of victims.

In the years since the terror attacks, the Families of Freedom Scholarship fund has awarded a total of $115.9 million to 2,825 students.

In the 2014-15 school year, the scholarship fund said it distributed $12.5 million to 760 students.

Families of Freedom Scholarship provides financial assistance for education to children, spouses and domestic partners of people who were killed or permanently disabled in the 2001 terror attacks.

The fund is a program of Scholarship America, a nonprofit scholarship and educational support organization.

Families of Freedom Scholarship is set to operate through 2030, when the last of the Sept. 11 children will have completed college.
