As Mets Widen Lead In NL East, Fans Hit Fever Pitch

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- You can tell Mets fans these days by the wide grins on their faces.

Following their three-game sweep of the Washington Nationals, the Mets (78-61) have a seven-game lead in the National League East.

One fan who has a Mets tattoo on his arm told WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs he believes the team has something special this year: "Swagger," he said.

"It gives me a lot of hope this year," the fan added. "It's been a long time."

Some Mets fans, however, are tempering their excitement given the team's history of collapses.

"It feels like 1986 again," said Mike, of Levittown, Long Island. "They have as good a shot as anybody to win the World Series.

"But ... I've seen it happen, where they're up by seven games with 17 to play and they blow it," he added.

The Mets open a four-game series at Atlanta at 7:10 p.m. Thursday.
