Waterspout Spotted Off Long Beach, Long Island Amid Storms

LONG BEACH, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A waterspout was spotted offshore from Long Beach, Long Island Saturday afternoon, as a result of the stormy weather.

Tom Provenzano captured video of the waterspout out in the ocean from the beach on Long Beach.

The waterspout dissipated before it reached the sand and posed no danger.

A waterspout is a narrow, weak, rotating column of air over water – similar to a tornado, but not with the same intensity.

Waterspouts can form during calm or stormy weather, and they typically do not cause major damage – though boats can sometimes get rocked around because of them.

Another waterspout was also spotted 15 miles offshore from Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey, CBS2's Vanessa Murdock reported.
