'Mamma Mia!' Closes On Broadway After Nearly 14 Years

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The long-running Broadway musical "Mamma Mia!" had its final curtain call Saturday night.

The final performance was staged at the Broadhurst Theatre, 235 W. 44th St.

The show features the music of the Swedish pop group ABBA. They are woven into what the production calls a "sunny tale set on a Greek Island," in which a woman seeks to discover her fathers' identity on the eve of her wedding.

"Mamma Mia!" played more than 5,700 shows on Broadway.

Some fans are super-troupers, having seen the musical several times.

"It was like a tranquilizer to me -- a fun happy show," said Theresa Macaluso. "It was addictive. You wanted to come back more and more."

"It's great music. It just keeps you hopping in your seat," said Tony Drake. "It's just wonderful."

"Mamma Mia!" opened on Oct. 18, 2001 at the Winter Garden Theatre, 1634 Broadway, after a successful London premiere. The production at the Novello Theatre in London's West End debuted in 1999 and continues to play.
