City Island Residents Raise Concerns Over Temporary Bridge

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Some City Island residents are concerned about a new temporary bridge being built connecting the island to the Bronx.

Resident Claudia Deich said the steel on the side of the bridge buckled "like and erector set" Tuesday.

But Deich claims workers showed up the next day and began paving the roadbed of the bridge as if nothing happened.

"At the very least, stop everything. Every inch of that bridge has to be gone over; it has to be tested," Deich told 1010 WINS. "It calls into question every ounce of construction that they've done to this point."

Residents are worried the bridge will fall down as they cross it with their cars.

"We're all on a bed of pins and needles," Deich said. "It's not fun to think that your bridge might fall from under you and your car ends up swimming."

The Department of Transportation said it is aware of the structural damage to the bridge and it is making repairs and putting in additional supports, 1010 WINS reported.

Officials said the main bridge will remain open to traffic as repairs are made to the temporary structure.
