D.C. United Beats NYCFC 2-1, Secures Playoff Spot

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Alvaro Saborio knocked in a loose ball on a free kick in the 92nd minute and D.C. United beat New York City FC 2-1 on a rainy Friday night to secure an Eastern Conference playoff spot.

D.C. United (14-12-6) snapped its six-game winless stretch to move into a first-place tie with the New York Red Bulls. NYC FC (10-15-7) had its three-game winning streak stopped.

Frank Lampard opened the scoring in the first minute for the fastest goal in NYC FC's first season. Bill Hamid blocked David Villa's fast-break attempt and Lampard slotted the rebound for his third goal in his last four games.

Fabian Espindola tied it in the 73rd minute. Josh Saunders dove to get a hand on Chris Pontius' shot and Espindola put in the rebound.

Villa sent a ball just over the crossbar in the 41st and rolled one wide of the near post in first-half stoppage time.
