Boat With 5 On Board Overturns In Jamaica Bay; 2 Later Die

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Five people tumbled out of a boat that capsized in Jamaica Bay Friday night, and two of them later died.

As CBS2's Matt Kozar reported, the FDNY and the U.S. Coast Guard were sent to the scene after the boat overturned just before 8 p.m. near Floyd Bennett Field.

Police said the five people were on what was believed to be a fishing boat.

Two of the people on board were able to swim back to shore and one called for help, police told 1010 WINS.

Luckily, the NYPD Aviation Unit is stationed at Floyd Bennett Field, and a member of the unit saw what was happening and rescued a person stranded on the rocks.

The other two victims were pulled from the water by FDNY and NYPD harbor units, CBS2 reported.

The two people pulled from the water by harbor units were rushed to Mount Sinai Beth Israel Medical Center Brooklyn in very serious condition, and were later pronounced dead, police said.

The other three boaters were taken to Coney Island Hospital, CBS2 reported.
