Bratton Welcomes New Class Of NYPD Officers With A Warning

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A new batch of police officers were welcomed into the NYPD with a warning from the city's top cop.

"Welcome to the NYPD," police Commissioner Bill Bratton told the new recruits during a swearing-in ceremony in Queens on Thursday.

Bratton also gave them all an admonition.

"One of the things that is always a bad day for me, when I have to discipline an officer for a conscious crossing of the line," Bratton said.

Referring to high-profile cases of police misconduct, Bratton urged the recruits not to violate the public's trust, 1010 WINS' Mona Rivera reported.

"You took an oath this morning to do no harm," Bratton said.

The commissioner pledged that the recruits will receive extensive training in de-escalating conflicts and how to use the least possible force against the public.

"Not break the law, to enforce the law," Bratton said.

After the ceremony, the commissioner told reporters that the training of officers is a priority saying, "We're spending a fortune."

The 678 police officers were the first class to be sworn in at the new Police Academy in College Point, Rivera reported.
