Busted! Police Commissioner Bratton Sniffs Out Pot Smoker On Wall Street

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- New York City's top cop weeded out a pot smoker on the street this week.

Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said he had just emerged from an early-morning Wall Street meeting when he detected the smell of marijuana in the air.

"All of a sudden, there it is, that smell," Bratton told reporters Friday. "I said, 'What the hell? It's 8:30 on Wall Street.'"

He and his security detail followed the scent, eventually spotting a young woman who Bratton said was "happily puffing away" while waiting for the pedestrian crossing signal, WCS 880's Rich Lamb reported.

"My security officer came up on one side, I came up on the other and tapped her on shoulder," Bratton said. "She looked over and I wish I had a photograph of that face because she instantly recognized me."

She was not arrested.

Instead, Bratton told her to throw away the joint, which she tossed in a nearby sewer, 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck reported.

He told the girl, who was carrying a backpack, that she might have a better academic day without the influence of weed.

"Only in New York," Bratton said.
