NYC Food Truck Lunch: Chicken Molé Platter From Organic Mexican Food

Perry, the founder of New York Street Food, brings you his latest review on New York City street food.

We've said it before and will say it again - Daily Specials are usually worth checking out. Daily specials are either what was fresh at the market or is a particular specialty of the chef.

That said, there's a relatively new food cart on 50th St between 6th & 7th Ave called Organic Mexican Food. It's impossible to tell if the food is really organic or if it's just a selling point, but we don't often see chicken molé on a food cart, so we wanted to check it out.

Organic Mexican Food has a full complement of tacos, burritos and quesadillas on the menu. There are eight types of fillings to choose from (including vegetarian options) and five different sauces. The Daily Special of chicken molé was available as a burrito for $8 or a platter for $10.

Chicken molé is one of those dishes where everyone's mother or grandmother has their own recipe, but the basics are chicken stewed in a brown sauce. The sauce is tomato-based and usually includes chocolate, but more along the lines of bittersweet chocolate than a sweet chocolate.

This chicken molé was very tasty! There was just a hint of sweetness, and a little more than a hint of spiciness, but it wasn't too hot. You could tell the meat had stewed over a long period of time.

The chicken itself was quite tender, falling apart in our mouth. There was also a nice amount of chicken, which was mainly thigh meat.

The chicken molé was served over a bed of yellow rice and beans that tasted even better when the molé sauce dripped down. A generous helping of shredded cheese was melted on top by the time we opened the container to eat lunch.

Towards the bottom of the dish, there was a bit of grease, but not an excessive amount.

We definitely recommend the chicken molé special from Organic Mexican Food. This dish was good enough to be served in a restaurant, where would probably cost around $15. The presentation here is not much, but the taste is worth checking out.

You can find the Organic Mexican Food cart on 50th St between 6th & 7th Ave, but closer to 6th. They don't have a social media presence, but are parked there every weekday for lunch, right in the middle of about 10 different food carts from various other nations.
