Man Convicted Of Shooting Wife Dead In Front Of 2 Kids In Elizabeth, N.J.

ELIZABETH, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A man was convicted Thursday of shooting and killing his wife in front of his two young children in Elizabeth, New Jersey.

Ewart Guillette, 36, of Hillside, was convicted in the 2010 murder of his wife, Stacy Guillette, 38, according to the Union County, New Jersey Prosecutor's office.

Ewart Guillette was convicted of murder, related weapons offenses, endangering the welfare of a child, and criminal contempt by a jury after a three-week trial before Superior Court Judge Stuart Peim, prosecutors said.

Around 8 p.m. on Aug. 30, 2010, Ewart Guillette came up to his estranged wife as she and their two children – then ages 6 and 8 – visited the YWCA Union County building on East Jersey Street in Elizabeth, prosecutors said.

Ewart Guillette fired multiple times at his wife as she stood on the steps of the YWCA – emptying one handgun of bullets and then taking out another and emptying it too, prosecutors said.

Stacey Guillette was pronounced dead at a local hospital, while the Union County Homicide Task Force quickly identified Ewart Guillette as the suspect, prosecutors said.

The defendant fled to Philadelphia after the shooting, but was arrested there hours later, prosecutors said. He had remained in jail on $2.5 million bail in the years leading up to his trial, prosecutors said.

Ewart Guillette was to be sentenced on Dec. 11. He could face 30 years to life in state prison.
