'Hamilton' Stars To Help Raise Money For Kids Group Founded By Alexander Hamilton's Wife
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The first private orphanage in New York City was founded in 1806. One of the co-founders was Elizabeth Hamilton, wife of Alexander Hamilton.
Today, that organization still exists -- now called Graham Windham. It provides everything from foster care and adoptive services to centers for after-school care.
"We do everything that we possibly can to work with families who are struggling to make ends meet, who are struggling to keep their children safe," Chief Executive Officer Jess Dannhauser told WCBS 880's Lynda Lopez.
Tatiana Martinez received so much help and support from Graham Windham that she came back to be a staff member.
"I was like, 'Hey, I want to start giving back,'" she said. "That's what I needed when I was younger, and nobody was there. I didn't have no after-school program. I didn't have nothing. And it's been remarkable."
But a constant need has been fundraising.
So Lin-Manuel Miranda and Phillipa Soo, who star as the Hamiltons in the smash Broadway hit "Hamilton," are performing Tuesday at an event to benefit Graham Windham.
"They just continue to shower their generosity on us," Dannhauser said. "To see people that look like our kids actually play it out is something that's really meaningful for all of us."
