LI Woman Gets Prison After Stealing $32,000 In Charity Scam

EAST NORTHPORT, L.I. (CBSNewYork) --  A Long Island woman will spend up to seven years in prison after stealing $32,000 in a charity scam.

Maureen Myles, 62, of East Northport, was found guilty of pocketing the money, which was raised in an event for Pam Capotosto and her 19-year-old son, who has cerebral palsy.

The money was intended to be used to purchase a wheelchair lift van and pay for other related expenses, WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported.

But the Capotostos never received the money, or the wheelchair van. According to prosecutors, Myles used the cash to remodel her home and take a trip to Florida.

Capotosto said she thought Myles was being a good friend when she offered to help the Greenlawn family raise money.

"She really had a hold on me, and used that, and made me do things that I might not have otherwise done," Capotosto said.
