2 Suspects In Custody After Police-Involved Shooting In Newark

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Two suspects are in custody after a police-involved shooting in Newark overnight.

Police flooded a residential block of 4th Avenue near 11th Street Tuesday morning searching for any remaining suspects after the shootout between officers and at least two gunmen.

People nearby described the scene around midnight as a tense standoff.

"In the middle of the night, you heard about five or six gunshots," said resident Lisa Carter.

"And then you just hear more shots -- boom, boom, boom, boom," another man named Willie said told 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck.

Investigators said Newark officers had been patrolling the area when they confronted the suspects, one of them pointing a gun at the officers. The officers then fired at the suspects, CBS2's Janelle Burrell reported.

"Right now, two weapons are recovered and the individuals apprehended," said Essex County Chief of Investigators Anthony Ambrose.

The incident happened just hours after President Barack Obama was in Newark promoting prisoner rehabilitation programs and reducing crime across the country. It's a problem residents in Newark have long dealt with.

"You just mind your business, when you grow up around it, you just mind your business," said Carter.

No police officers were injured during the incident. Investigators initially thought one of the suspects was injured in the shooting, but they now confirm no one was hurt.

Prosecutors said one of the suspects has been charged with assault on a police officer and both are facing weapons charges.
