Police: Man Swings Wooden Paddle At Homeowner During LI Burglary

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Police have arrested a man they say swung a large wooden paddle at a Long Island homeowner after burglarizing his home.

Keno Jamell Ramsay, 19, of Cambria Heights, got into the home on Atom Court in Uniondale through a basement window around 10 p.m. Tuesday, police said.

After setting aside some items near the window, police said he woke the 53-year-old homeowner and demanded money and food.

Ramsay then picked up a large wooden paddle and began swinging it at the victim, police said.

CBS2's Jennifer McLogan spoke with the homeowner who did not want to go on camera.

"You are not going to steal from my family. You are not going to steal from my community, I did what I had to do," he said.

The man was getting ready fr bed when he heard a basement window cracking and found himself in the midst of a home invasion.

"Curtains flapping, he had taken glass out, we got to fighting, I threw him down, he got out a paddle, started hitting me," the man recalled.

The owner struggled with Ramsay and called out to his 15-year-old son to call police.

"I did listen to the call. The 15-year-old was very, very calm throughout the whole thing. Lasted seven minutes, and he gave appropriate identification, and exactly where the individual was in the home," Detective Lieutenant Richard LeBrun, Nassau County Police said.

The owner suffered injuries to his chest and arms but refused medical attention.

The robbery left local residents shaken.

"Very unsettling, very scary," Joseph Nalley said.

Nalley said incidents like this one are the reason he has surveillance cameras and an alarm system.

"I am concerned, but we have a dog, a very big dog, that is one system of security," Lavern Vanommeren said.

Ramsay was found with $500 worth of glass knickknacks from the victim's family stuffed in his pockets. He faces charges of burglary, criminal weapons possession and attempted robbery, but told a judge he is innocent. He was in jail Wednesday night on $150,000 bond.

He is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday at First District Court in Hempstead.
