NYPD: Man Asking For Cigarette Assaulted, Hit By Car

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A man is in critical condition after being assaulted by a group of men and then stumbling into the street and getting hit by a passing car, according to police.

The 23-year old man was walking on Liberty Avenue in Jamaica, Queens at around 4:15 a.m. when he stopped to ask a group of men for a cigarette, according to police.

The group initially ignored the man, then assaulted him, where he went into the street and was hit by a black Toyota, according to police.

He was taken to Jamaica Hospital in critical condition, police said.

Emir Zulfiqar, 23, who was driving the vehicle, was arrested leaving the scene and later coming back, police said.

He faces charges including leaving the scene of an accident and disobeying a traffic device.
