False Alarm Leads To Evacuation Of Movie Theater In Edgewater, NJ

EDGEWATER, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A false alarm led to the evacuation of a movie theater Saturday night in New Jersey.

Witnesses said a noise that sounded like a gun at the Multiplex Cinemas in Edgewater set off the scare.

Cell phone video from inside the theater shows moviegoers quickly getting up, grabbing their stuff and getting out. Around 1,000 moviegoers then poured out into the parking lot.

Edgewater Mayor Michael McPartland said it all started when someone slipped and fell inside the theater. The noise sounded like a gunshot and when someone yelled gone, everyone started running, CBS2's Matt Kozar reported.

Police and first responders rush to the scene. The bomb squad also combed through the theater with canines, but found nothing. No one was seriously hurt.

The mayor said people are on edge after the attacks in Paris.

"When I heard it over the radio, when I came over, I got down here right away because everyone is on edge," he told Kozar. "We're so close to Manhattan here, this would definitely be a soft target, something along the lines of a theater."

The movie was closed for the night, but will reopen on Sunday.
