Hunts Point Market Deals With Busy Thanksgiving Rush

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- It's safe to say a lot of the food that will end up on your Thanksgiving plate this Thursday made a stop in the Bronx.

Monday is the busiest day of the year at the Hunts Point Terminal Produce Market.

"It's triple the amount of business in one day," said Arthur Depinto of M&R Tomato Distributors, who has been doing this for 26 years. "It's like Toys R Us on Christmas."

"Crazy, it's a long day -- probably a 20, 24-hour day," Depinto added.

"The energy and the pace just intensifies," said Denise Goodman, who owns M&R Tomato Distributors. "We don't sleep a lot, you nap."

All day, retail distributors will be picking up vegetables and fruit for city supermarkets, greengrocers, retail outlets and restaurants.

Thirty-million pounds of produce  -- including sweet potatoes, cranberries, apples and lettuce -- is expected to be distributed throughout the Metropolitan region.
