Cops: Women Sold Fake Designer Bags At LI High School Fair
HICKSVILLE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Four women have been arrested under charges of selling counterfeit designer merchandise at a Long Island Catholic high school craft fair, according to police.
The women were allegedly selling counterfeit items from designers like Louis Vuitton, Michael Kors and Chanel at a holiday crafts fair at Holy Trinity Diocesan High School in Hicksville on Saturday, according to police.
"Most of the individuals who purchase these high- end pocketbooks for $40 dollars -- meanwhile, the pocketbook goes for $500 to $5,000 dollars," Det. Lt. Richard LeBrun, of the Nassau County Police, said. "They know exactly what they're purchasing."
Despite an industry crackdown, fake designer bags are still attracting buyers, CBS2's Carolyn Gusoff reported. Experts say there are several ways you can tell if a bag is fake -- like checking the quality of the zipper and the authenticity of the lining of the bag.
"Some bags have holograms, others have actual codes embossed in the leather," Stefani Satira, a boutique manager, said.
Holy Trinity did not comment on the incident, according to Gusoff.
The women are due in court in December.
