Police: Van Being Chased By Officers Strikes Car, Kills Driver In Yonkers

YONKERS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- The driver of a vehicle being chased by police in Yonkers struck another car and left a woman dead Monday afternoon, police said.

Around 4:15 p.m., Yonkers police received a call of a suspicious van near 4 Schroeder St., police said. The occupants of the van were allegedly trying to break into a parking meter, police said.

Officers in a marked squad car saw the suspect vehicle in the area of North Broadway, and noted that it had previously been reported stolen, police said.

The officers chased the van in an attempt to pull it over, police said. While heading north on Warburton Avenue just ahead of Odell Avenue, the van struck a sedan traveling south on Warburton Avenue and killed the driver, police said.

The woman driving the sedan was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Police have not released her identity, but said she was from Yonkers.

The two people in the suspect van suffered serious injuries in the crash and were hospitalized, police said.

The investigation into the incident was ongoing late Monday. Anyone with information was asked to call the Yonkers police Detective Division at (914) 377-7724.
