Officials: Union Police Officer Fatally Shot Pit Bull That Charged At Him

UNION, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A Union, New Jersey police officer was forced to shoot and kill a dog that charged at him, authorities said.

Union officials said the shooting happened on Tuesday near Shetland Drive. They said the pit bull-mix got loose and chased after a resident as well as an animal control officer, who called police.

The owner of the dog wasn't home at the time of the incident and authorities said other family members tried unsuccessfully to corral the dog.

But authorities said the dog eventually charged at one of the three responding officers, who then shot the dog once in the head.

The dog's owner has previously received "multiple summonses'' related to the dog getting loose, authorities told NJ.com

No people were injured in the incident.
