500 Bags Of Heroin Found In Bronx Park

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Workers discovered hundreds of bags of heroin while cleaning up a Bronx park this weekend.

The drugs were found Sunday afternoon in University Woods Park, said New York City Parks Advocates President Geoffrey Croft.

"They discovered some rice and some bags poking out, and they poked around even further, and they realized they were drugs," Croft told 1010 WINS. "It's definitely unusual to find inside a public park."

There were over 500 glassine bags of heroin hidden under the rice, which is used to keep moisture out of the heroin, Croft said.

Two phones and a box cutter were also found, Croft said.

The drugs were handed over to police, according to Croft.
