Huntington Cracking Down On Illegal Handicap Parking

HUNTINGTON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- The town of Huntington is cracking down on drivers who park illegally in handicap spaces.

The move comes as parking spaces are harder to come by during the holiday shopping season.

Town volunteer Paul Warbergh told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall he rides around looking for violators. If he finds one, he takes a photo of the car. The photo and a ticket for $230 are then sent to the owner of the vehicle.

He said he recently met one man "and I took a picture. The man ran across the street, says, 'Oh please, don't do that. I'm simply getting lunch for my office. Oh no, but I'll move it now.' I said, 'That's not the point. If a handicap person came along, they couldn't park here.'"

Warbergh said people park in handicap spaces because "they think they can get away with it."

Bob Janoff, who can legally park in handicap spaces, said walking is very difficult for him, so if a person who is not disabled has taken one of the parking spots, it upsets him.

"They say because they'll only be there five minutes. I say, 'It's four minutes and 59 seconds too long,'" Janoff said.
