Former 'Brick City' Cast Member Shot Dead In Newark, Cops Say
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A former gang member turned anti-violence activist who was featured in "Brick City,'' a Sundance Channel documentary series set in Newark, has been shot to death, authorities said Tuesday.
Darel Evans, 33, was shot in Newark late Monday night and was pronounced dead at the scene, Essex County prosecutors said. A motive for the shooting remains under investigation, they said.
Further details were not immediately released, including what type of weapon was used or how many assailants may have been involved.
Evans, a reformed Crips gang member known as Creep, was profiled in the Peabody award-winning TV series for turning his life around and for his relationship with Jessica Victoria Jaques, a woman from the rival Bloods gang, more commonly known as 'Jayda.'
Brooke Barnett, Jayda's lawyer, told 1010 WINS' Samantha Liebman that she was saddened to hear about Evans' death.
"The time that I was with him, I mean he was really giving back to his community, working at the Integrity House," Barnett said. "That's what makes this so sad, seeing that he was really on the up-and-up."
Barnett added later that she hadn't spoken with Evans since "Brick City" ended.
"I'm heartbroken for the family, I'm heartbroken for his children," Barnett said.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office is investigating the incident.
