Authorities: NYPD Detective Received Bribes, Warned Businesses Of Raids

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Two New York City police officers have been arrested on charges of bribe receiving and official misconduct, according to police.

NYPD Detective Yatyu Yam, 37, was arrested on Monday and suspended without pay, authorities said. He was ordered held on $25,000 bail and was ordered to surrender his passport and firearms.

1010 WINS reports that the second officer has been identified as 50-year-old Robert Sung, a Lieutenant with the NYPD.

According to the charges, Yam and Sung accepted cash and other forms of payment to notify club owners when raids by either the narcotics or vice unit were going to occur.

Authorities say Yam allegedly approached the owner of a club in Flushing, Queens, known for ketamine and marijuana sales, and proposed to be paid if he tipped off the club's manager about any planned police raids.

In August 2014, three or four people were detained by police in the same club, accused of openly possessing illegal drugs.

Authorities say Yam later asked that the suspects be released without charges -- and they were. Court documents say Yam later told an unnamed informant that he knew about the raid and had tipped off the manager, who Yam claimed erred by allowing the drugs inside.

A manager of two other clubs in Flushing told investigators that he paid Yam about $2,000 each month for three years for "protection'' at the facilities, court papers said. The arrangement meant Yam would call the manager to warn him if police planned to raid either establishment, according to authorities.

According to the charges, Sung allegedly advised an officer that he would give advance warning of an upcoming raid on a karaoke club in the Flushing, Queens area. Sung allegedly told the officer not to actively inspect the club, and to falsely transmit the inspection over police radio.

Yam pleaded not guilty in Queens Criminal Court on Tuesday.
