FBI Joins Gilgo Beach Investigation 5 Years After First Human Remains Found
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The FBI is joining the investigation into one of Long Island's greatest unsolved mysteries.
Federal agents agreed to assist Suffolk County police five years after the first of 10 human remains were discovered at Gilgo Beach. The FBI has helped in the case in the past, Newsday reported.
The first body was found on Dec. 11, 2010 while police were searching for Shannan Gilbert, a 24-year-old escort who disappeared on May 1, 2010.

By April, police had discovered the sets of 10 remains on Gilgo Beach, all found about seven miles apart along Ocean Parkway.
Suffolk County Police Deputy Commissioner Tim Sini, Chief of Department Stuart Cameron and homicide detectives will visit the crime scene Friday. The department's new leadership, which took over following the resignations of former commissioner Edward Webber and ex-Chief of Department James Burke, has vowed to take a fresh look at the investigation.
Police have said the remains belong to eight women, a man and a toddler. At least four victims were women in their 20's who were prostitutes.
Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota has said he believes as many as three killers are responsible, but others suspect a serial killer is responsible.
Police don't believe Gilbert's death is linked to the others. Her remains were found in a marsh on Oak Beach in December 2011.
Police have theorized Gilbert may have drowned, but her family disputes the conclusion.
