Balmy December Weather Has New Yorkers Struggling To Find Holiday Spirit

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- Christmas is less than two weeks away, but warm weather has been putting a damper on the holiday spirit.

Temperatures have been hitting record highs for the holiday season, a stark contrast to what it usually looks like this time of year, making some people feel like December is a dud.

The season began with Starbucks taking Christmas off of its cups.

"I have always loved the holiday cups, and it does feel less Christmassy," Alex Addison said.

And now this balmy weather.

As CBS2's Emily Smith reported, there's always a trip to Radio City Music Hall to see the Rockettes to help salvage the Holiday spirit.

Or ice skating in Bryant Park.

"December 14, and it's what 63 degrees? I love it, I love it. The ice is soft, but it's terrific," Steven Bush said.

If you want a shot of cold weather there's always an ice bar in midtown that's 23 degrees.

It's made of 100 tons of ice. It has ice chairs, and even the glasses are made of ice that melts as you sip.

They supply a heavy coat, and for $25 to $75 you're in a winter wonderland where even the chandeliers are made of ice, each block weighs 20 lbs.

"We have so many people here telling us they are here for a little holiday spirit," Rich Marsiglia, General Manager, Minus 5 Ice Bar, said.

Personal shopper Ali Peters said clothing can lift your spirits. Cozy cashmere, velvet pants, and other Christmassy outfits can still work in the warmer weather, just skip the tights and coat.

"I think when you're wearing something that makes you feel a party dress or holiday inspired jacket you will feel more excited for the holidays," Peters said.

With a little effort and the right frame of mind you can get into the spirit even if the usual traditions have taken a back seat.

"I have a fireplace, we have not made one fire. I am looking forward to it maybe in January," Erika Katz said, "I haven't made cookies, I haven't made hot chocolate, I actually haven't made any holiday food."

With candy canes in hand CBS2's Smith was doing her best to spread some holiday cheer in Columbus Circle.
