Teen Who Kicked Mother, Baby In Bronx Robbery Gets 3 1/2 Years In Prison

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A teenager who kicked a new mother in the back last December, sending the woman and her baby tumbling to the ground, was sentenced on Friday.

It was the drop-kick seen across New York City; a young woman carrying her 2-month-old baby kicked to the curb so 19-year-old Alonzo Brown could steal her cell phone, CBS2's Brian Webb reported.

Victim Odilia Orozco, who brought her child to court, told the judge through a translator that she's been scared to walk the streets alone ever since the attack.

"Unless I have to go out and I know he won't be able to be there, then I will be safe," she said.

Brown's attorney did most of the talking for him. She said the teen has always been remorseful, even embarrassed by what he did. And even though he had a rough childhood, she said he never blamed anyone but himself.

Brown told the judge with a little more than a whisper that he is very sorry and that he wants to make a change in his life, Webb reported.

"I need to change my ways," Brown said.

Brown was sentenced to 3 1/2 years in prison and four years of supervision, along with the promise that he will stay away from Orozco when he completes his sentence. He has already served one year of that sentence since his arrest.

Orozco said outside court she and her baby are doing fine and that she's satisfied with the sentence, Webb reported. She said she now wants to put the entire experience behind her.
