Police Investigate Assault Of NYC College Student As Possible Bias Attack

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Hate crimes detectives are probing a possible bias attack at a New York City college after police say a white student was punched by a black man.

City Councilwoman Laurie Cumbo says in a statement the victim is Jewish and wasn't seriously injured in the attack.

The assault occurred at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn Wednesday evening after a final exam, police said.

They say the 24-year-old victim was in a hallway when an unidentified black man bumped into him. They say the victim then tapped his attacker with an umbrella, the men exchanged words and then the victim was punched in the face and chest.

Police say the man said he didn't like Jewish people or white people when asked why he punched the victim then walked away.

Earlier this month, a Jewish man was attacked in his store on the Upper West Side. The suspect identified himself as a Muslim and threatened to kill the 52-year-old owner, before punching the man in the eye, WCBS 880 reported.
