Blumenthal Calls For Investigation After Man Dies Of Overdose At Conn. VA Hospital

WEST HAVEN, Conn. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) on Saturday was calling for an investigation into a veteran's death at the West Haven Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Blumenthal said Saturday he contacted the VA's Office of Inspector General.

Blumenthal said veteran Zachary Greenough died of an overdose at the facility, and said his office was told Greenough obtained illegal drugs while living there. Blumenthal is calling for action to ensure the safety of inpatient veterans.

The New Haven Register reported that according to a friend and fellow veteran, Greenough died late Dec. 22 or early Dec. 23 and was believed to be 29 years old.

VA spokeswoman Pamela Redmond confirmed to the newspaper that a patient in a PTSD program was found dead in a hospital bathroom.
