5 Charged In Suffolk County DWI Checkpoint Operation

HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Police in Suffolk County arrested five people overnight Friday into Saturday in drunken driving sobriety checkpoints and patrols set up in the Hauppauge and Smithtown areas.

Officers from the Suffolk County Police Highway Patrol Bureau and the New York State Police set up a sobriety checkpoint at the Shoprite Shopping Center, at 335 Route 347 in Hauppauge. A total of 564 vehicles went through the checkpoint.

DWI saturation patrols were also conducted on the Route 111 and Route 347 corridors near the checkpoint, police said.

Victoria Kelly, 23, of Holbrook, was charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs, while Elvis Valerio, 27, of the Bronx, was charged with driving with ability impaired by alcohol.

Both were to be arraigned Saturday at First District Court in Central Islip.

Three others were given field appearance tickets to appear in court at a later date on drug charges.

• Daniel Olsen, 20, of Smithtown, was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree:;
• Sebastian Skaar, 22, of Port Jefferson, charged with unlawful possession of marijuana;
• Amanda Mullen, 27, of Coram, was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana.

The operation was intended to prevent injuries and fatalities caused by drunken driving and driving on drugs – particularly during the New Year's holiday weekend.
