Man Shaken After Being Carjacked, Pistol-Whipped In Englewood, N.J. Driveway

ENGLEWOOD, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A Bergen County man was speaking out Friday afternoon after being carjacked and pistol-whipped in his driveway.

As CBS2's Christine Sloan reported, Enrique Figoroua was confronted by a man dressed all in black around 8 p.m. Thursday. The man put a gun to Figoroua's head in the driveway of his sister's house, near Cleveland Street and West Palisade Avenue in Englewood, New Jersey.

"The gentleman approached him with a gun, hit him in the side of his head -- as you can see right here, he got four stitches last night -- and said, 'Give me your money,'" said Carolyn Gomez, a friend and interpreter for the victim.

Figoroua said the attack happened as he unloaded laundry and sent his wife and children into the house on Cleveland Street.

The suspect took off with his sport-utility vehicle. His wallet with little money, and his immigration papers, were inside.

"This is really sad that, you know, this poor gentleman -- he's just taking care of his family, doing the right thing, looking for part-time work – whatever he can find, he'll do," Gomez said. "To have this happen to him is really sad."

Figoroua, originally from San Salvador, recently lost his home to floods in Louisiana.

"It's awful," Gomez said. "All the neighbors and the people from our parish have been helping."

Figoroua said the suspect smashed his cellphone, but he used a landline to get help.

"He called (911) right away," Gomez said. "The police came right away."

Police chased the suspect to the Bryant School, at Tryon Avenue and Teaneck Road in Teaneck. He abandoned the SUV, which was being dusted for fingerprints Friday.

Meanwhile, cameras at a store called Better Meat Produce caught the carjacking suspect fleeing with a gun in his hand.

"He's scared; worried about things that happened to him," Gomez said.

Police late Friday were still looking for the suspect, but said they will not be releasing the surveillance video until next week.

Figoroua said he immediately alerted police because he fears the carjacker could use his immigration documents for something illegal.
