Pesticide Found In Heroin Seized In New Jersey

NEW JERSEY (CBSNewYork) -- A new danger has been discovered in a batch of heroin in New Jersey.

State police say the pesticide carbaryl was found in three separate brands of the drugs seized in Middlesex County last month.

"It seems like every day there's another aspect to how people's lives are in danger, people of all ages," said Shauna Moses of the New Jersey Association of Mental Health and Addiction Agencies.

Heroin is already dangerous, but the pesticide can cause loss of coordination, involuntary convulsions, or worse WCBS 880's Kelly Waldron reported.

"The pesticide further underscores the urgency and the need to educate people of the dangers and the higher fatality risk," Moses said. "These risks are very real. It could lead to sickness and death."

The heroin was labeled "Level 10," "Miracle" and "Top Chef."

Carbaryl is commonly sold under the brand name "Sevin," and can be found in home gardening and agricultural products.

While many police officers in the Garden State now carry the heroin antidote Narcan it will not work to counteract symptoms of pesticide consumption, Waldron reported.
