Five Facts About Ben McAdoo

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Here's a brief look at Ben McAdoo, who has been named the 17th head coach in New York Giants history.

1. He becomes the second-youngest coach in the NFL.

McAdoo is 38 years old. Only new Miami Dolphins coach Adam Gase is younger -- by 8 1/2 months.

2. He has worked his way up from the high school level.

McAdoo's coaching career began as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Homer-Center High School in Pennsylvania. He later had college jobs at Michigan State, Fairfield and Pittsburgh before breaking into the NFL with the New Orleans Saints in 2004. He then followed Mike McCarthy to San Francisco and Green Bay before landing the Giants' offensive coordinator job in 2014.

3. He turned around the Giants offense.

When he arrived in New York, McAdoo inherited a unit that ranked 28th in the NFL the previous year in total offense. Under McAdoo's guidance, the Giants climbed to 10th his first season and eighth last year. Meanwhile, Eli Manning saw his passer rating jump from 69.4 in 2014 to 92.1 and 93.6 the past two seasons.

4. He comes highly recommended.

Manning, Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and McCarthy were among the notable figures praising McAdoo in the press in recent days. "I think Coach McAdoo and I work well together," Manning told WFAN. " ... We lost some important guys, some key guys to the offense, but were still able to score a lot of points." Rodgers told Newsday: "Ben's a great coach. ... He's a grinder." And McCarthy said: "Ben is the ultimate preparation individual. He's prepared for this opportunity for a long time."

5. He has a Super Bowl ring.

McAdoo served as the tight ends coach of the 2010 Packers, who defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLV.
