Republican Lawmaker: Connecticut's Economy Is In 'Shambles'

HARTFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork) -- Republican lawmakers in Hartford are complaining that Democrats who hold the majority are ignoring the long-term impact the new budget will have on Connecticut taxpayers.

Senate Republican leader Len Fasano told WCBS 880's Fran Schneidau he believes the Democrats are ignoring the reality check ahead if they continue to tax and spend.

"This economy is in shambles," Fasano said. "We have deficit after deficit, tax increases after tax increases, and until they change the leadership at the capital, Connecticut's not going to change." 

Connecticut passed their Democratic-led $40.3 billion budget in June 2015. The budget was placed under criticism throughout the legislative process, with opponents raising questions and concerns over the $1.5 billion in tax increases included in the two-year budget plan.

General Electric recently announced they would be moving their corporate headquarters from Connecticut to Boston, after citing the state's proposed tax legislation as a concern for the company. Health insurance giant Aetna voiced similar concerns after the budget was passed

According to Democratic lawmakers, the two-year budget will provide real property tax relief for families and Connecticut businesses. Senate president Martin Looney said the Republican take represents the "dark side" of party politics.
