Iconic Ziegfeld Movie Theater Set To Close, Will Reopen As Events Space
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The historic Ziegfeld movie theater on West 54th Street is set to close, with plans for the space to be re-purposed as a high-end performance and event venue.
The Ziegfeld opened in 1969 as one of the last large single-screen movie theaters in New York City. The theater was named after the original Ziegfeld theater, which served as a Broadway hot-spot in the early 1900s.
Fans of the Ziegfeld are sad to see the theater go.
"It's sad -- I guess that's what change is all about," one man told 1010 WINS' Al Jones. "What I hate to see is all the lights go away."
"It's very upsetting, I feel like this is a New York icon, another man said.
"Star Wars: The Force Awakens," will be the last film shown at the 1,300-seat theater, which is scheduled to close in a few weeks. The theater is set to reopen at the end of 2017.
