NYC Enlists Help Of NY Islanders To Encourage Residents To Prepare For Winter Weather

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Mayor Bill de Blasio's administration released a video on Wednesday, offering tips to New Yorkers on how to best prepare for winter weather.

"We want to make sure every New Yorker has a plan for winter weather and is fully prepared in case of a storm," de Blasio said in a statement. "From our elderly residents to our youngest students, we want to keep every New Yorker safe and warm through the coldest months – and these important tips will help get our city ready for the winter season."

The video, with special appearances from the New York Islanders, features tips on making an emergency exit plan, winterizing your home and car, staying warm, home heating tips and what to do if you lose heat or hot water.

"We've had bitterly cold weather this week and snow is in the forecast, so we want New Yorkers to make sure they're fully prepared for all that winter may bring," said NYC Emergency Management Commissioner Joseph Esposito.

The National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center is warning of heavy, "perhaps crippling'' snow across the northern mid-Atlantic region, including the Baltimore, Washington and Philadelphia metro areas.

Prediction center Meteorologist Rich Otto said these bigger cities could get 1 to 2 feet of snow, but first, the storm will bring ice and freezing rain to Kentucky, Tennessee and Arkansas on Thursday night into Friday.

As the storm moves east Friday, it will bring snow to West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C. It may reach Philadelphia on Friday night and affect New York City and Long Island as it moves north.
