LIRR Train Hits Car On Tracks East Of Pinelawn Station, Snarling Morning Commute

WYANDANCH, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- The morning commute was snarled for some Long Island Rail Road customers on the Ronkonkoma Branch Thursday after a train hit a car on the tracks in Wyandanch.

The car was stuck on the tracks east of the Pinelawn station around 6:30 a.m. The driver safely escaped before the train hit, saying his GPS erroneously placed him on the tracks.

Video from the scene showed the car with a mangled rear-end and debris strewn across the area.

Service on the Ronkonkoma Branch was suspended between Ronkonkoma and Farmingdale on and off for a time Thursday morning, but was finally restored around 8:30 a.m. with delays.

Customers were being advised to use alternate branches, such as the Port Jefferson and Montauk branches.
