Sunshine, Warmer Temperatures Create Slushy Conditions On City Streets And Sidewalks

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Streets across Manhattan have been plowed and shoveled, but some people still had a tough time getting around.

As CBS2's Elise Finch reported, melting snow created a host of dangerous conditions.

A little sunshine and temperatures in the upper 30s led to melting snow and slippery corner conditions.

Streets will became even more difficult to navigate when temperatures dropped Monday night.

"All the snow is starting to melt and it's kind of like a good thing and a bad thing," Sherry Simpson said.

It takes more than just rock salt to melt nearly 27 inches of snow, and on Monday there was some help from mother nature in the form of mild temperatures, but all that melting created dangerous conditions for pedestrians.

"It's been actually treacherous, actually walking by I got hit from snow falling off a building, thankfully it wasn't ice," Connor Brownell said.

Melting snow and icicles periodically fell from buildings during the warmest part of the day. Piles of plowed snow created slush covered sidewalks and corners as it melted, causing pedestrians to slosh through and jump over icy puddles.

"Terrible, terrible. I have to cross and I don't know how to do it, I don't want to fall," one concerned woman told WCBS 880's Peter Haskell in Chelsea.

Another woman slipped and fell to her knees while trying to cross 8th Avenue, she was helped up by two good Samaritans.

Residents said streets and intersections that were thoroughly plowed, now need another pass.

"I think they could do a better job, making it easier for pedestrians, because I feel like we run this city to be honest," David Janett said.

Things will get worse before they get better.

Frigid overnight temperatures will lead to refreezing almost every night this week, so all of the water and slush will turn to ice.

"People are not going to be able to walk on it. They're going to try and get over these things, they're going to fall, they're going to hurt themselves," Jeff Kaufman said.

Some people have been walking in the street to avoid slushy sidewalks and corners, another danger created by the melting snow.
