NYPD Detective Helps Deliver Newborn On FDR Drive

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- An NYPD detective might have a future as an obstetrician.

Det. Michael Sharpe of the Collision Investigation Squad helped deliver a baby Tuesday morning on FDR Drive.

Sharpe was heading to Manhattan traffic court when he heard a 911 dispatch call for a woman in labor.

When the detective arrived on the scene, he found the woman sitting in the passenger seat ready to give birth.

Sharpe, along with the child's father, helped deliver the baby, wrapping the newborn in a blanket before emergency personnel arrived.

The mother and baby were taken to New York Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center and are both in stable condition.
