Yonkers DPW Chief Pleads For Patience As Snowplows Work To Clear Side Streets

YONKERS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Several days after a major snowstorm socked Westchester County, many roads in Yonkers are still in need of some attention from snowplows.

As WCBS 880's Sean Adams reported, there's improvement but work still needs to be done in Yonkers, where main roads are down to blacktop, secondary streets are slushy and some of the narrow, winding dead ends are still snowbound.

Michelle Darby lives on Poplar Street, which hasn't seen a plow near the dead end.

"There's plenty of people who live here and we have kids here who have to go to school, and it becomes a safety hazard actually because we have kids who have to walk through here," she said.

Department of Public Works Commissioner Thomas Meier pleaded for patience and said narrow streets pose a real challenge.

"It's very difficult to drive a large piece equipment. And these men and women with DPW are driving 8 to 10 foot plows down an 8 foot, 2 inch roadway from door to door," Meier said.

Saturday's blizzard dumped up to two feet of snow in parts of New York.
