Retailers Using Robots To Improve In-Store Shopping Experience

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork)-- Traditional retailers are looking for innovative ways to improve the in-store shopping experience.

While online shopping continues to grow in popularity, retailers are now turning to technology to add heat to the competition.

A robot who can tell you where an item is located inside a story may be coming to a retailer near you. Technical sales associates like "Pepper" can even suggest a jacket or dress that might look good.

Pepper was just one of the new technologies displayed at the National Retail Federation Expo in New York.

"This allows you before you make your choice to really see the differences," Intel's Michelle Tinsley told CBS2's Jill Wagner.

She said the company is using technology to give shoppers all the information they'd find online, while in the physical store.

Another new technology showcased was an interactive food display. The device has motion sensors detect when you're reaching for an item, and then shows you what's in it and its carbon footprint.

"Consumers want to be more aware, where is my food coming from?" Tinsley said.

Technology is even changing the way we buy shoes. Nordstrom and Intel are testing a digital foot scanner that gives you a 3-D reading of your foot size, width and arch.

Dressing rooms are also getting a makeover. Levi's stores will soon allow you to ask for a different style jean or size with the touch of a button.

You can expect to see many of these new technologies in stores in the United States by the end of the year.
