Hudson County Prosecutors Investigating Police-Involved Shooting In Jersey City

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The Hudson County Prosecutor's Office is investigating a police-involved shooting that left a man wounded in Jersey City.

The shooting happened in the area of Ocean and Virginia avenues around 12:30 a.m. Thursday, the prosecutor's office said.

A spokesperson for the city told CBS2 that officers were attempting to arrest a driver who allegedly stole a vehicle when he tried to drive off, dragging and injuring a police officer in the process.

Police then opened fire on the suspect's car.

The driver, described as a male in his mid-30s, was taken to Jersey City Medical Center. Sources told CBS2 the suspect was shot in the back of the head. He was listed in critical, but stable condition, the prosecutor's office said.

City spokesperson Jennifer Morrill said an impartial investigation into the shooting will be launched.

"As the use of deadly force is the most serious action an officer takes on our behalf, Mayor [Steven] Fulop has consistently supported an impartial investigation by a completely different entity and a presentation of the facts to a grand jury in all such cases," she said. "As always, we will cooperate fully with the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office."
